The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is one of the worst games of the year

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has officially launched but unfortunately, despite delays and plenty of extra development time, the game has not hit it off with fans. In fact, right now, it is the lowest-rated game of the year.

On Metacritic, low review scores from nearly all outlets have led to The Lord of the Rings: Gollum falling to the bottom of Metacritic's 2023 game rankings, with the PC version sitting in 295th place, and the PS5 version sitting at 296th place. At the time of writing, the game had a Metascore of 40 and an OpenCritic rating of 43 (213th place in a list of 214 titles). Still, it's worth noting that Metacritic's rankings exclude versions of games with fewer than seven critic reviews, so other editions of Gollum are not represented.

Reviewers have overall described the game as uninteresting, broken, and outdated. However, more favourable reviews show some promise, claiming the game is “an oft-beautiful and oddly endearing adventure”, giving players a chance to see Gollum in situations they otherwise wouldn't have.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum takes players on an adventure parallel to the events described in The Fellowship of the Ring. This fantasy action-adventure game invites players to embark on a quest to retrieve the One Ring. With an original story set in various regions of Middle-earth, the game introduces familiar characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved books.

Kitguru says: As players delve into The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, opinions on the game's strengths and weaknesses will continue to surface. While some may enjoy exploring Middle-earth and uncovering the game's story, others will be disappointed with Daedelic's work on the beloved franchise.
