Overwatch 2’s big PvE campaign has been cancelled

Back when Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 in 2019, many of us were confused as to why a sequel was necessary. Part of the reasoning on Blizzard's end was to include a PvE campaign, with hero talent trees and a whole new co-op narrative to play through. Now less than a year on from Overwatch 2's launch, plans for the campaign mode have been cancelled.

Overwatch 2 will no longer get the PvE content fans had been promised all those years ago. Blizzard said that development on the PvE experience “hasn't made the progress” they were hoping for, adding that there was “no end in sight” for the development timeline. Ultimately, Blizzard decided that the PvE mode as originally planned was taking too many resources away from the live game and as a result, it has been cancelled.

While the original PvE campaign with customisable hero talents and other extras is no longer coming, Blizzard has said that PvE content will still arrive in Overwatch. A number of missions have already been created and Blizzard plans to release them as singular levels as part of Overwatch 2's regular seasonal content.

The first story missions will be available starting with Season 6, which begins in August. It is unclear if these missions will still be available to play in future seasons, or if they'll be removed and replaced with new missions over time, but the latter seems more likely.

KitGuru Says: The Overwatch hero cinematics and animated shorts were always hugely successful for Blizzard. It is clear that a lot of Overwatch fans do want story content, which makes the cancellation of the campaign very disappointing. Still, we will be getting story missions in some form, we'll just have to wait and see how regularly Blizzard is able to push out that type of content, in addition to continued work on the main PvP modes.
