Nintendo President confirms no new console until 2024 at the earliest

Earlier this week, someone claiming to be familiar with Nintendo's plans said that the company's next-gen console is “progressing well”, hinting at a 2024 launch. Now, Nintendo is setting expectations, confirming that there will be no new hardware coming before the end of March 2024.

As part of Nintendo's latest earnings call (via Bloomberg), President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the company does not plan to release new console hardware in the current fiscal year, which ends on the 31st of March 2024.

While Nintendo does not plan to release a new console in the immediate future, it is becoming increasingly likely that we'll see a new Nintendo system in 2024. While it would be rare to see a Sharp display in a living room nowadays, the company is still a major screen supplier across the globe. In Sharp's recent earnings report, the company confirmed that it is set to supply displays for a “new game console”, but did not name the company. This note was swiftly removed from the publicly available documents.

Sharp could be supplying displays for any number of handheld system makers. There has been a rise in handheld gaming systems in recent years, particularly PC-focused handheld devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, so it is entirely possible that Sharp is referring to a console-like device instead. Still, given the recent rumours around a ‘Switch 2', the timing is interesting.

KitGuru Says: Tears of the Kingdom is launching to rave reviews, which will no doubt lead to another boost in Switch sales. By this time next year, hopefully we'll be looking ahead to new and improved hardware from Nintendo.
