The next Mortal Kombat game will reboot the franchise

In recent weeks, a number of leaks have pointed to an imminent announcement for Mortal Kombat 12. NetherRealm has begun teasing a new game as part of its Mortal Kombat anniversary celebrations but a new leak has revealed everything we need to know.

Early rumours around Mortal Kombat 12 claimed that the game would be a reboot of sorts, with a campaign mode that resets the timeline and allows for a whole new generation of Mortal Kombat stories to be told. Now, it would seem that NetherRealm is going all-in on this reboot idea and is actually calling the game ‘Mortal Kombat', or ‘Mortal Kombat 1'.

Bilbil-kun is a leaker primarily known for revealing new PS Plus titles days ahead of reveal. This person seems to have some level of access to backend PS Store data, allowing them to garner early details on upcoming announcements.

In their latest post, it is claimed that Mortal Kombat 1 will release this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch, leaving the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One systems behind. The game will hit the new standard AAA price tag of $69.99, although the Switch version will be cheaper at $59.99. Currently, it is believed that NetherRealm is targeting a September release window and plans to fully unveil the game very soon.

KitGuru Says: It looks like we're heading towards a full-scale reboot for Mortal Kombat. I've really enjoyed several of the Mortal Kombat games over the years and spent a lot of time with MK10, but I've never been a huge follower of the main story. With that in mind, this reboot is quite exciting, as it opens up a perfect entry point for those looking to jump in for the first time.
