Asus ROG Ally is expected to feature a custom Ryzen 7840U APU

The ASUS ROG Ally is set to arrive later this year, offering a more powerful alternative to the Steam Deck, complete with Windows support rather than Linux, which will have benefits for game compatibility. While Asus has said that the ROG Ally will be more powerful than the Steam Deck, exact internal specs have not yet been announced. However, a new leak points to a custom Ryzen 7840U APU at the core of the system. 

The shipping manifest for the console shared by VideoCardz reveals some details about the upcoming portable console. As per the document, the console will feature a Ryzen 7 7840U APU with a Radeon 780M iGPU, the same APU featured on two other portable consoles: the GPD Win Max and the AOKZEO A1 Pro. However, ASUS has mentioned that the APU is “custom”, suggesting that it might have been modified to suit the console's specific requirements. As per the latest leaks, this chip is codenamed Z1.

Moreover, ASUS has already confirmed the product codes for the console. As far as we know, there are two codes: RC71L and RC71X. The difference between the L and X variants is currently unknown, but it's common for handheld makers to have multiple models with different memory and storage options. Colour variations or special editions could also explain the difference.

Other specs shown include 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, 512GB of PCIe 4.0 storage (M.2 2230), and Dolby Atmos support. Some additional display specs like 500 nits brightness and 7ms response time have also been confirmed. The ASUS ROG Ally console is expected to launch “soon,” according to the company. It's anticipated that the console will release sometime this quarter.
