Media Molecule co-founder leaves studio following announcement of Dreams’ closure

Last week we reported that the community-driven game creation toolkit known as Dreams would be ending support later this year – in a surprising move announced by Media Molecule. Following this, the studio’s co-founder and creative director has announced that they are leaving Media Molecule.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Media Molecule’s co-founder and creative director Mark Healy took to the platform to say “So, after SEVENTEEN incredible years of co-birthing and building Media Molecule – I have decided it is time for me to fly the nest – set sail and chart a new course – today is my last day at MM.”

Healy continued, “From LittleBigPlanet to Dreams and beyond – proud to have played my part and lucky to have jammed with some truly brilliant people – and such a wonderfully talented Community which I will continue to be a fan of…but a strong cosmic breeze is pulling me and my pirate heart is awakened, I'm not getting any younger so am going to indulge myself in the winds of my various curiosities for a while and see where they take me.”

They concluded by saying “So here's to new beginnings, following one’s heart and exploring the unknown – Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum – I'm off on a Pirate adventure! (One that involves making games that is).”

The discontinuation of Dreams came as a big blow to fans of the game, and this latest news only adds further fuel to the fire of disappointment felt by players. Hopefully both Healy’s departure and Dreams’ closure comes simply as a result of creative evolution – and wanting to work on bigger and better things. It will be interesting to see what both Media Molecule and Mark Healy make next.
