The Super Mario Bros. Movie becomes highest-grossing game adaptation ever

After a great deal of anticipation The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here and has been breaking records left and right, with the film managing to achieve the biggest video game adaptation opening. Less than a week after hitting this record, the film has continued to rake in hundreds of millions of Dollars – now officially becoming by far the highest grossing video game adaptation of all time.

With a box office of $677,959,700, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is officially the highest grossing film based on a video game, far surpassing the previous record-holder (Warcraft with $439 million).

The film’s success is doubly impressive when considering the fact that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has only been in cinemas for less than two weeks meaning it has potential to rake in even more. With the current rate of its earnings, it is somewhat safe to assume that the film will ultimately bring in over $1 Billion when all is said and done – though of course we will have to wait and see.

As mentioned, being the highest grossing video game film is not The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s only record; it also surpassed the animated juggernaut that was Frozen 2 to achieve the biggest worldwide opening of all time for an animated film. When it comes to films as a whole The Super Mario Bros. Movie also broke records, managing the biggest opening of 2023 so far.

With all of its success, it is safe to assume that more Nintendo films are on their way – and that we are entering a new age of video game films.
