Multiple job listings suggest Sony is going all-in on cloud gaming

While Xbox has spent a great deal of time pushing its cloud gaming services (thanks in no small part to Microsoft’s ownership of the Azure cloud computing service), Sony has focused much more on local gaming solutions. This seems to be shifting somewhat with a number of new job listings – alongside recent rumours – suggesting that Sony is going all-in on cloud gaming.

Following the report that Sony is working on a handheld device [the Q-Lite] which uses cloud gaming to stream PS5 titles to the portable system, The Verge has uncovered a whole host ofcloud-related job listings posted by Sony – 22 in fact.

Many of these job listings begin by stating “As a member of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Future Technology Group (FTG), you'll have the opportunity to lead the charge in the cloud gaming revolution. FTG is at the forefront of putting console-quality video games on any device.”

Even more transparent is the listing for a Director of Product Management for Cloud Gaming, whose job is to “Develop and deliver the strategic vision for cloud game streaming at PlayStation” and asks applicants: “Are you a ground-breaking innovator in the cloud streaming product space? Then you likely agree that Cloud Gaming is on its way to becoming a major part of the gaming industry.”

Sony already has game streaming somewhat implemented into its PS5 (and PS4) thanks to the long-running ‘Remote Play’ service – a service which has slowly improved over time. Still, this latest round of job listings seems to suggest that Sony is prepping for a big push towards cloud gaming . Hopefully we get to hear more when the PlayStation Q-Lite is officially announced.
