Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red told investors that it had plans to ‘write off' funds spent on an upcoming game, Project Sirius, as the team plans to reboot and start again. Now, the company has explained this a bit more, citing a new effort to “cut costs early” rather than let things snowball.
CD Projekt Red has had some messy development schedules and issues keeping projects ‘within scope'. Sometimes all of that hard work and effort pays off, as we saw with The Witcher 3 and other times, it ends in disaster, as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077. Moving forward, CD Projekt Red has a multi-game roadmap, with multiple projects in the works with different budgets in mind. Project Sirius is supposed to be a lower budget title, worked on by a smaller team compared to The Witcher 4 (unofficial title) and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
In a financial earnings call this week (via VGC), CD Projekt's CFO, Piotr Nielubowicz, spoke on the recent changes to Project Sirius, stating that “in order to stay innovative, we must experiment and be brave when trying new paths, but also stay in control and keep the right course”. He then points out that Project Sirius is in development at “a new studio” in the CDPR family.
The company will “keep evaluating the situation” with the thinking that it is “better to cut costs early, and even restart if needed, than to carry on”. CDPR CEO, Adam Kiscinki added that it was “a tough decision to make”.
Project Sirius is set to be a new spin-off game set in The Witcher universe, developed by CD Projekt-owned studio The Molasses Flood.
