31% of Americans prefer texting to talking

This won't come as much of a shock to many reading, but a recent report shows that almost a third of all Americans prefer to text, rather than picking the phone up and talking to someone.

The new study released by Pew Internet claims that 31% of Americans text when possible, finding it more appealing that having a direct conversation with the other person at the end of the line. The study group of young adults were the highest in this category, with the average of 110 texts per day being recorded.

One in ten young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 say that they send or receive at least 200 text messages per day, or around 6,000 messages every month. 25 to 34 year olds average 42 texts per day, with the figure dropping as the study group gets older.

Younger people prefer to text.

The report also details ethnicity, with African Americans and Hispanics more likely to use texting. A household making less than $30,000 a year are more likely to send text messages.

According to statistics, the report claims that people who send or receive more than 51 text messages every day much prefer to deal with contacts via texting, rather than voice communication. On the other hand, 70% of people who receive less than 10 texts every day prefer to speak with someone over the phone, rather than via SMS.
