Nintendo Switch Online will seemingly carry over to Nintendo’s next-gen console

Nintendo has had an interesting relationship with its retro titles. While the console manufacturer has historically brought most of its back catalogue of classic games to each successive system, the release of a new console would typically see these efforts rebooted with each new generation. Fortunately, it seems as though Nintendo is sticking with its successful Nintendo Switch Online service moving forward into future generations.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘Homura’, the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) released a report primarily focused on the ongoing Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard. That said, the CMA did make reference to Nintendo, in particular with regards to NSO, saying:

“Nintendo Switch Online has been excluded from our shares as Nintendo's cloud gaming service is very limited. Nintendo's cloud gaming service is only available on the Nintendo Switch device and [REDACTED].”

This isn’t the first bit of redacted information released by the CMA however it is one of the more interesting omissions. As it stands, the Nintendo Switch Online service is unsurprisingly only available on the Nintendo Switch. While it is possible that NSO is planned for release on other platforms, this is highly unlikely, and so the most logical explanation is that [REDACTED] is referring to Nintendo’s next console – whenever that is released.

As mentioned, previous generations would see players needing to purchase these older titles time and time again. While it was nice that players could outright buy these retro games at the time, being able to bring the library forward to future generations through NSO is ultimately the more useful approach and so hopefully this is indeed the case.
