Tetris Effect Connected update to add native PS5 support and new modes

Tetris Effect is one of the most engaging games in recent history, taking the scientifically addictive and satisfying time-based puzzle stylings of the original game and expanding upon it with beautiful music, mesmerising visuals and engaging feedback. This was all enhanced further with the title’s free ‘Connected’ update which added multiplayer and more. Once again, Tetris Effect is set to get a massive update later this month.

Tetris Effect connected is set to receive an update on the 22nd of February which allows the game to support the upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset – though that is far from the only change. The update will be coming to all platforms simultaneously and will bring with it some long-desired additional modes.

One of the most exciting additions will see the game’s Classic Score Attack mode be playable in a single-player form. This mode replicates the physics and rules of the classic NES Tetris – which is very different from the modern version. Previously only available in the VS mode, the addition of single-player Classic Score Attack is in and of itself huge. Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that the mode will now offer both NTSC and PAL variants – making it even more authentic to the NES originals.

A number of other pre-existing modes will also be seeing some updates, with the Marathon Mode now allowing players to use Tetris Effect’s ‘Zone’ mechanic. The game’s Purify and Master modes now also both offer Endless variants – a welcome addition indeed.

PlayStation 5 players will undoubtedly be the most pleased by this update however as the game is finally set to get a native PS5 version. While this may not seem like a big deal initially, one of the most immediate improvements will see Tetris Effect Connected now take full advantage of the DualSense’s haptics. Considering the fact that the original release already made excellent use of the DualShock 4’s inferior rumble, it will be incredibly exciting to see how the DualSense gets implemented.

It is worth noting that the PS5 upgrade will cost $10 – though for the haptics alone this would be worth it, let alone the inclusion of PSVR2 support. A full explanation of all the changes can be found HERE.

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
