Steam has broken multiple concurrent user records

Over the past few years, we have seen the Steam platform grow from strength to strength, surpassing its own concurrent user count on a semi-regular basis. Now, the platform has reached a new major milestone, seeing more than 33 million users online at the exact same time – with over 10 million playing concurrently.

As available to view on SteamDB, yesterday saw Valve’s platform break its own concurrent user record with more than 33 million Steam users online – 33,078,963 to be exact. For the past three years – aided at the time by COVID-19 – Steam’s concurrent user count has been steadily rising, with the platform first hitting 20 million concurrent users back in March of 2020.

What’s more, alongside this broken record, another was achieved, with more than 10 million players being in-game concurrently (10,284,568 to be exact) for the first time also. Of course, concurrent user counts ebb and flow, and as of writing the concurrent users have now dropped back down to 22 million with 5.6 million in-game.

Still, 33 million concurrent users even for a moment is a major feat, and considering the trajectory of the platform’s growth, it will only be a matter of time before such a figure is the norm more than the exception.

While not the only storefront on PC, Steam certainly is the biggest. As other clients such as GOG and Epic Games Store continue to gain an audience, however, it’ll be curious to see whether Valve’s cash cow will forever reign supreme, or if it’s currently as big as it will get.
