PlayStation 5 officially surpasses 30 million consoles sold

The PlayStation 5 has been a hot ticket item ever since it was first released in late 2020, with great demand and supply shortages leading to a highly popular console which few could buy. That said, two years into the console’s lifecycle, the PlayStation 5 has officially sold over 30 million units.

Making the announcement at CES, Sony revealed that since its release in late 2020, the PlayStation 5 has officially sold over 30 million units worldwide – an impressive achievement considering the console’s relative lack of supply.

It is interesting to see that in just two short years, the PS5 has managed to surpasses the lifetime sales of multiple highly-popular retro consoles including the likes of the original Xbox (24 million), the GameCube (21.74 million) and is even nipping on the heels of the SEGA Mega Drive and Nintendo 64 (30.75 million and 32.93 million respectively).

For some additional context, Sony announced back at the end of May last year that the PlayStation 5 had sold 20 million units, meaning the console manufacturer managed to shift an extra 10 million units in just 7 months – indicating that supply issues may finally be easing, allowing more units to be made and sold in a shorter amount of time.

In many ways, the PlayStation 5’s life has only just begun, and so it will be interesting to see how many units the console will have sold when all is said and done.
