Overwatch newcomers will have to play roughly 100 matches to unlock all original heroes

Blizzard has made some questionable decisions with Overwatch 2. The sequel will completely replace the original next week, ushering in a new age of battle passes, 5v5 gameplay and character grinding. We already know that players will have to unlock new heroes by levelling the in-game battle pass, but newcomers will have to grind extensively just to unlock the game's original characters.

If you have never played Overwatch, or you are heading into Overwatch 2 with a fresh account, you will have to play 100 matches in order to unlock all of the original heroes. Blizzard is also gating new heroes, as players will have to level up each season's battle pass to unlock new heroes – or pay for tier skips.

In a slightly more welcome change, new players won't be able to play ranked/competitive modes until they've put considerable time into casual matches. You'll need to win 50 Quick Play matches in order to access ranked. That number might be on the high side, but it will ensure that players entering ranked matches have decent experience with the game and have access to a good number of heroes.

Overwatch 2 is launching in ‘early access' on the 4th of October for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.
