Gotham Knights will offer ray tracing on PC

For many, ray tracing is viewed as being the next big leap for video games graphically. While not always necessary to make a beautiful looking game, offering real time ray tracing can make for a major boost in fidelity and immersion. While the hype surrounding Gotham Knights seems to be rather muted, one exciting revelation is the fact that the game will offer ray tracing when it launches – at least on PC.

Intel recently released a deep-dive into their new Arc A-Series graphics, where the chip manufacturer revealed that the upcoming open-world co-op action RPG ‘Gotham Knights’ from studio WB Games Montreal would feature a number of ray tracing technologies, namely ray-traced reflections and shadows.

For the uninitiated, ray-tracing can be applied to all manner of assets, from reflections, to shadows, to global illumination and ambient occlusion. Different games will implement different levels of ray tracing across these categories, with each of them affecting the visuals in varying ways. Offering both ray-traced reflections and shadows is nice to see, especially when some games which advertise ray-tracing will only offer ray-traced AO or shadows – two of the lesser effective ray-tracing implementations.

As the confirmation of PC ray-tracing came from Intel and not WB Games, we do not yet know whether the console versions will offer such options. With how demanding ray-tracing can be, it would not be surprising to see such a technology not make it to consoles.

That being said, with the game set to launch on the 21st of October, we do not have too long to wait to find out – though hopefully WB Games speaks on the matter beforehand. We will have to wait and see.
