Unity CEO calls devs who don’t bake monetisation into games “****ing idiots”

In the wake of the announcement that video game engine creator Unity and IronSource are set to merge, the company’s CEO sat down for an interview, where they claimed that those who do not embed monetisation into their games early on in the process are “****ing idiots.”

John Riccitiello, the CEO of Unity Technologies, took part in an interview with PocketGamer where they discussed the merger between Unity and ironSource, the self-proclaimed “leading business platform for the app economy,” where “our mission is to help any app developer turn their app into a scalable, successful business.”

The company does so by offering a platform for user growth through “ROI positive campaigns,” while also “[increasing] your app’s ARPDAU and maximize the value of your users with powerful ad mediation and high-impact ad formats” – among many other buzzwords and acronyms.

PocketGamer asked Riccitiello about ironSource’s controversial monetisation practices, to which the Unity CEO (and ex-EA CEO) stated:

“Ferrari and some of the other high-end car manufacturers still use clay and carving knives. It’s a very small portion of the gaming industry that works that way, and some of these people are my favourite people in the world to fight with – they’re the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people. They’re also some of the biggest fucking idiots.”

The full statement – which can be found HERE – offers a slightly more nuanced look at the entire question, but regardless, it is clear that Riccitiello’s perspective is one that is not shared by all creatives across the industry. It will be interesting to see what this merger does for both Unity and the games built using its engine.
