Blizzard responds to fan concerns over microtransactions in Diablo IV

Diablo IV had a pretty good showing at the Xbox and Bethesda showcase a few days ago, but due to Diablo Immortal's recent microtransaction controversies, fans have been worried about Blizzard's monetisation plans for the new game, something that the studio has now responded to.

While Blizzard still hasn't really acknowledged the disappointment in Diablo Immortal's monetisation systems and hidden gameplay caps, the company does seem to want to establish that Diablo IV is an unrelated project, developed for a different market. While Diablo Immortal is geared towards casual players and catching the few whales with pockets deep enough to be truly competitive, Diablo IV is being developed as “a full price game” designed for PC and consoles, rather than the mobile gaming market.

In response to concerns on Twitter, Diablo franchise lead, Rod Fergusson, said: “To be clear, D4 is a full price game built for PC/PS/Xbox audiences. We are committed to delivering an incredible breadth of content after launch, for years to come, anchored around optional cosmetic items & full story driven expansions.”

The response confirms that while Diablo IV may have microtransactions in the form of cosmetic items, it won't be going in the Diablo Immortal direction, with paid dungeon rewards and weird balancing quirks to push people towards paying rather than grinding.

Diablo IV does not have an exact release date just yet, but it will be heading to Xbox Series X/S consoles and PC in 2023.
