Bethesda confirms Starfield player character won’t be voiced

We got our first look at Starfield gameplay on Sunday evening, with Todd Howard sharing a 15 minute gameplay demo and providing new details on adventure ahead. One area of the demo showed first-person character conversations but did not show the dialogue options interface for the game, leaving us with some questions. Bethesda has begun responding, confirming that Starfield will have a ‘silent' protagonist.

Prior to Fallout 4, Bethesda primarily did not provide voice acting for the player-made characters of its RPGs. The lack of main character voice allowed players to immerse themselves in the games further by adding their own voice to the character as you select dialogue options. This was changed with Fallout 4 and the addition of a voiced protagonist seemingly hindered the variety of dialogue options available to the player.

Bethesda has previously said it wants to get back to its RPG roots with Starfield and that includes bringing back the silent protagonist. All dialogue scenes in the game will be first-person as shown in the gameplay demo, and there are no voiced lines for the player character.

Bethesda gave us a glimpse at its RPG mechanics during the gameplay demo, including an all new character creation system, new character traits and more. However, there are still elements we have yet to see, including the dialogue interface, inventory management, shops/bartering etc, but we should see more of that closer to release.

KitGuru Says: While I understand why some people do prefer having a voiced antagonist, I have always preferred the old-school silent protagonist approach with a wider variety of dialogue options to choose from. How do you feel about Bethesda's decision to go with a silent protagonist this time around?
