The Call of Duty franchise has made over $30 Billion

The Call of Duty franchise is without a doubt one of the biggest in gaming. Ever since the explosive success of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the first-person shooter franchise has become the game to beat each year when it comes to sales – with very few other titles managing to do so. In a new report, it has been revealed that since its inception, the COD franchise has made over $30 Billion.

In a recent report by The Washington Post discussing the future of Call of Duty and Warzone, it was revealed that premium Call of Duty titles have sold a total of 425 million copies. This makes it the 2nd best selling video game franchise of all time when it comes to paid titles. The current champion in this regard is Tetris with 495 million copies (though 425 million of those are from paid mobile titles). Technically speaking, Mario is the number 1 selling gaming franchise with 760 million copies sold – however that includes all of the Italian plumber’s MANY spin-offs.

Other impressive statistics includes the fact that Call of Duty Warzone has amassed over 125 million players since its launch in 2020. That number pales in comparison to the franchise’s success on mobile however, with COD Mobile seeing over 650 million downloads.

All of this sales success has pushed the franchise to making over $30 Billion, which helps to explain Activision Blizzard’s mighty high sell price of £68.7 Billion to Microsoft. Maintaining such a large machine is not easy however, with more than 3000 employees said to be working on various COD titles within Activision.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard soon to be finalised, these numbers represent the near final figures for the end of this era of Call of Duty. It will be interesting to see what direction the franchise takes moving into the future with Microsoft.

KitGuru says: Are you surprised by these numbers? Have you played COD Mobile? Do you think Call of Duty will change once Microsoft takes over? Let us know down below.
