First X670E and X670 motherboards revealed for Ryzen 7000

Last night during AMD's Computex 2022 keynote, the company gave us our first peak at next-gen PC components, including new details on Ryzen 7000 processors and Socket AM5 motherboards. Now, the first X670 and X670E motherboards have been revealed, with ASUS and MSI being amongst the first. 

AMD has three chipsets planned for the first generation of AM5 motherboards, X670 Extreme, X670 and B650. The X670 Extreme chipset is the flagship, offering full PCIe 5.0 capabilities and support for ‘extreme overclocking'. The standard X670 chipset is for enthusiasts, and will offer PCIe 5.0 storage, but supporting PCIe 5.0 graphics lanes on X670 is optional, so not all motherboards will include this. Finally, B650 is the mainstream chipset – these motherboards will be available at “mainstream price points” and deliver PCIe 5.0 storage lanes.

During the keynote, AMD confirmed a full batch of X670E motherboards on the way, including the ASRock Z670E Taichi, the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme, the Gigabyte X670E Aorus Xtreme, the MSI MEG X670E Ace and the Biostar X670E Valkyrie.

We're still waiting on more specific details from some motherboard vendors, but so far, Asus and MSI have shared more about their upcoming X670 motherboards.

On the Asus side, the company has revealed more details about the ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme, This motherboard supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 connectivity for graphics and NVMe SSDs, so you can benefit from increased bandwidth and higher speeds. The motherboard has new design elements in place, including new Q-Design features, like the PCIe Q-release button, a quick release design for the memory DIMM slots, and a quick release design for the M.2 slots, making it easier to install key components like RAM, graphics cards and NVMe SSDs. The new motherboard also comes with all the cooling and power delivery extras you'd expect from a motherboard aimed at overclocking.

Asus will have more AM5 motherboards to show later this year, including new high-end ROG motherboards, and boards from other product lines.

MSI is taking things a step further and unveiling many of its upcoming X670 motherboards now. There will be three ‘Extreme' models, including the MEG X670E Godlike, the MEG X670E Ace and the MPG X670E Carbon WiFi, all supporting the full array of new technologies, including DDR5 and PCIe 5.0.

MSI has also unveiled one standard X670 motherboard so far, the Pro X670-P WiFi, which still supports DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, but there are areas where cutbacks are made. For instance, PCIe 5.0 lanes for the GPU aren't mandatory for standard X670 motherboards, so this model will forgo that in favour of PCIe 4.0 slots for graphics cards, and one PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD slot for storage, accompanied by three M.2 PCIe 4.0 slots.

We expect to see more AM5 motherboards from other vendors soon. The AM5 platform and Ryzen 7000 series processors are currently due to launch this autumn.
