MSI introduces the PS5-ready Spatium M480 Play SSD

MSI has announced a new Spatium M480 PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD variant. Designed to fit inside the PlayStation 5, the new Spatium M480 Play SSD features a smaller heatsink without sacrificing the performance provided by the original models.

As with the other two Spatium M480 SSDs, the Play variant can provide users with maximum read speeds of 7,000MB/s and write speeds of 6,800MB/s. Available with 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, MSI's new PS5-ready SSD uses a Phison E18 controller and up to 2GB of DDR4 memory as cache to maximise performance.

Like most high-end PCIe 4.0 SSDs, the M480 Play features TRIM (performance optimisation), SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology), LDPC (Low-Density Parity Check) ECC algorithm, and APST (Autonomous Power State Transition). Moreover, it supports AES256 encryption, TCG OPAL2.0 and Pyrite specifications, and E2E data path protection. MTBF is rated at 1.6M hours and endurance at up to 3,000TBW.

The only real difference between the Spatium M480 Play and the original model is the heatsink included with the SSD. To fit inside the PlayStation 5, MSI had to design a smaller aluminium heatsink capable of dissipating the heat generated to prevent thermal throttling. In addition, all models are backed by a five-year warranty (or rated TBW, whichever comes first).

KitGuru says: Despite being designed for the PS5, PC users can still mount the M480 Play in a PC, and it will work correctly. If you wanted to grab the standard M480 with the heatsink, but the gold heatsink wasn't your thing, the Play variant might be a good alternative.
