Amazon’s cloud gaming service ‘Luna’ officially launches today

Amazon has been working on its own game streaming service, Luna, for years now. So far, the service has only been available in trial form and in limited territories. That changes today, however, with Amazon Luna officially launching across the US, adding new games and channels, and implementing Twitch integration.

Those who subscribe to Amazon Prime will get a certain number of games playable for free on Luna, including the likes of Devil May Cry 5, Observer, and Immortals Fenyx Rising. Meanwhile, you can also subscribe to channels for a mix of other titles, including Luna+, Family, Retro, Jackbox Games and Ubisoft+.

Most of the channels have a subscription fee of $4.99 per month, but for Ubisoft+, you will be looking at a $17.99 per month bill. However, with Ubisoft+, you will get day-one access to all new games from Ubisoft, so if you play a lot of Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six and other Ubisoft titles, it could still be worth the price.

As of today, Amazon Luna is now available throughout the US. Unlike Stadia, which is based on Linux, Amazon's service is based on Windows servers with Nvidia graphics cards, so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues getting in the way of new games coming to the service. Theoretically, any PC game could be added to Luna without additional development work, which could entice other publishers looking to explore cloud gaming a bit more.

Currently, Luna supports up to 60FPS gameplay, and up to 4K resolution in ‘select titles' – most games run at 1080p. Luna itself is available across PC, Mac and Amazon's Fire TV.

KitGuru Says: Amazon has arrived a little late to the cloud gaming market, but the company has a good chance of making Luna more successful than Stadia, in part due to the fact that Amazon has Twitch at its disposal, giving it a direct line to the gaming market.
