Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 to offer latest CPUs from AMD and Intel

Microsoft hasn't yet announced a successor to the Surface Laptop 4, but as usual in the tech industry, leaks can give us an early glimpse at what we can expect. Like the predecessor, the Surface Laptop 5 will be available as a 13.5-inch model or a 15-inch, each packing a selection of Intel and AMD processors.

As you may have expected from the Intel processors available for the Surface Laptop, the spec sheet leaked by Windows Prime (via My Laptop Guide) shows the new Microsoft laptops will come with a 12C/16T Core i5-1240P (13.5-inch model) or a 14C/20T i7-1280P (both models). As for the AMD chips, the Surface Laptop 5 13.5 can pack a 6C/12T Ryzen 5 6680U and the 15-inch laptop an 8C/16T Ryzen 7 6980U.

The leaked spec sheet also details the display, which will feature the same 3:2 aspect ratio as other Surface Laptops, a 1500:1 contrast ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. In addition, the 13.5-inch display has 2256×1504 resolution, while the 15-inch one has 2496×1664 resolution. Both displays support Dolby Vision and have touch capabilities.

Depending on the configuration, the Surface Laptop 5 can pack up to 32GB of LPDDR4x memory, which is unexpected. When AMD announced the Ryzen 6000 series, it had only listed them as supporting DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory. This leaves us with two options: the chips are refreshed Ryzen 5000 series chips, like the Ryzen 7 5825U and the Ryzen 5 5625U, or AMD has built custom Rembrandt-based APUs with support for LPDDR4 memory.

In the spec sheet, Microsoft lists the AMD-based laptops as having up to 21 hours of battery life and up to 19 hours for the Intel versions. Moreover, the laptops will have up to 1TB of SSD storage, depending on the model. Lastly, they will support Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4.0 through the 2x USB-C ports.

KitGuru says: Would you prefer if Microsoft used refreshed AMD chips instead of the new Rembrandt-based ones?
