GTA V has outsold the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise

Despite being nearly a decade old, Grand Theft Auto V continues to sell like hotcakes. As part of Take-Two Interactive’s most recent Quarterly fiscal earnings report it was announced that the 2013 open world game had sold 160 million copies – single handedly surpassing the sales figures of other entire franchises.

Take-Two interactive, the publisher responsible for the likes of GTA, Bioshock and Borderlands, recently released their Quarterly fiscal earnings report. As part of this report, it was revealed that Read Dead Redemption 2 had sold almost 43 million copies, becoming the 2nd best selling title in the US during the last 3 years when it comes to Dollar sales.

More impressively is the fact that GTA V continues to sell at a rate most brand new releases would aspire to reach, despite being almost 10 years old. With 5 million more copies sold since the previous Quarter, GTA V has now officially sold 160 million copies, further cementing its second place status (behind Minecraft’s 238 million copies sold).

For context, GTA V’s sales alone accounts for 43% of all GTA games sold across its entire history. Even more impressive perhaps is the fact that GTA V alone has outsold the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise (155 million), and is set to overtake the full Final Fantasy franchise (164 million) likely in a manner of months.

The consequences of this success has meant that the wait for a new GTA game was extended far beyond any other previous time gap between entries – though it is understandable to see why Rockstar North is in no rush to release GTA VI given the current game’s sales.
