Samsung’s first PCIe 5.0 SSD is almost twice as fast as PCIe 4.0 SSDs

PCIe Gen 4.0 has only been available to consumers for a short amount of time, but the industry is already upgrading to PCIe Gen 5, with the switch beginning with Intel's recently launched 12th Gen Core processors and Z690 motherboards. PCIe 5.0 SSDs aren't available yet, but we've now got an early look at performance thanks to one Intel employee. 

Intel's Chief Performance Strategist and former tech journalist, Ryan Shrout, posted a video on Twitter this afternoon showcasing an upcoming PCIe Gen 5 Samsung SSD running on a 12th Gen Core system. Initially, this performance demonstration was intended to be shown at CES 2022, but Intel and many other companies have pulled out and will no longer appear in-person due to COVID-19 concerns.

As you can see in the video above, this is an enterprise-class Samsung PM1743 PCIe Gen 5 SSD. While the PCIe 4 SSD in the system achieved 7GB/s speeds, the Gen 5 SSD was able to achieve 13GB/s speeds in the benchmark.

Samsung and other SSD makers will be rolling out PCIe Gen 5 SSDs in 2022, starting with enterprise-class drives, with consumer SSDs coming later down the line. If this initial benchmark is any indication, we should broadly expect PCIe Gen 5 SSDs to be significantly faster than the still relatively new PCIe Gen 4 SSDs, with up to 2x more performance.

We should see and hear much more about the future of SSDs and PCIe Gen 5 devices during CES 2022, which begins on the 4th of January.
