5 games added to Nintendo Switch Online

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service was met with some controversy when it was announced, due in part to the fact that the added perk of N64 and SEGA Mega Drive games was lackluster. Fortunately, Nintendo continues to add new games, the latest being 5 SEGA Mega Drive titles.

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo revealed that 5 more titles will be coming to the SEGA Mega Drive games service, saying “Relive some of the iconic games that defined SEGA Genesis. Today, five additional power-packed games have been added to the SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online library and are playable right now.”

The new games now available on the SEGA Mega Drive NSO service are:

  • Altered Beast
  • ToeJam & Earl
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • Sword of Vermilion
  • Thunder Force II

While the initial launch line-up of SEGA games was somewhat lackluster, this latest update adds some of the console’s more iconic titles by including the likes of Altered Beast and ToeJam & Earl.

Not all is perfect however. The service is still missing some of the biggest games to come from that console, including Sonic the Hedgehog 1; Sonic 3 & Knuckles; Comix Zone; Alex Kidd; and Golden Axe II to name but a few.

The discussion surrounding game preservation is becoming more and more important as time goes on. Because of this, it is somewhat unfortunate to see Nintendo opting to go the route of offering a subscription service for those wanting to engage in some old school gaming. Hopefully services such as these are mere stop gaps on the way to full and complete backwards compatibility.
