Saints Row delayed following unrealistic release date announcement

The Saints Row reboot was only just revealed a couple of months ago at Gamescom, complete with a February 2022 release date. However, the game has now been swiftly delayed, pushing it into the second half of next year.

In an announcement today, Deep Silver and Volition revealed that Saints Row is now targeting an August 23rd 2022 release date and will no longer be available on the 25th of February. The studio says that its “priority is to create the best Saints Row game yet”, adding the game “wouldn't be up to the standards” set if it were to release in February as supposedly planned.

Given the swift delay, it would seem that the originally announced date was unrealistic and this delay may well have already been planned internally when the game was initially revealed. This is a tactic we're seeing more often with game announcements recently, with another example being Marvel's Midnight Suns. The title was announced at Gamescom with a March 2022 release date, before being delayed just a couple of months later. In 2020, we saw Cyberpunk 2077 delayed numerous times as well, with sources indicating that development staff knew well beforehand that meeting the announced release dates was not possible.

Embracer Group, the parent company of Saints Row publisher, Deep Silver, has told investors that Saints Row is planned for the 2022-2023 financial year, so it is possible that Saints Row could slip again into late 2022 or early 2023.

KitGuru Says: We're at a point now where we can rarely trust any game's announced release date and the recent pandemic is not solely to blame for this. There have been too many instances of publishers announcing unrealistic release dates with the intention of delaying.
