Spider-Man 2 announced with Venom as the villain

At today’s PlayStation showcase, Insomniac Games surprised fans when they announced two entirely new games. The first was a new Wolverine game, with the second being a teaser for Spider-Man 2, featuring Venom as the villain.

During the end credits to 2018’s Spider-Man, Venom was teased as a future villain. 2020’s Spider-Man Miles Morales released with Venom nowhere to be found, suggesting that the team at Insomniac Games were saving him for a future title. This future title was – unsurprisingly – Spider-Man 2, which is set to release in 2023.

Though the teaser trailer itself offered few details, the PlayStation Blog featured more information regarding the much-anticipated sequel. According to Insomniac Games’ Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations, Ryan Schneider, “While pushing the capabilities of the console (PS5) will be very exciting, we’re equally pumped to craft all-new stories for Peter and Miles in this sequel. Just as in our previous Spider-Man games, we not only want to tell a great Super Hero story, but also deliver a compelling human story, one full of heart and humor that dives deep into the people behind the mask.”

Other details which have been confirmed include the fact that the game will be exclusive to PS5, will release in 2023, and will feature Venom as the primary antagonist. Furthermore, while the Iron-Spider suit was made available as a bonus costume in 2018’s Spider-Man, it appears as though Spider-Man 2 will see Peter Parker adopt the appendiages canonically.

Spider-Man 2 will see Bryan Intihar return as Creative Director, with Ryan Smith as the Game Director. Though not confirmed, the teaser showed both Peter Parker and Miles Morales working together to take enemies down, suggesting that Miles will either be a companion NPC (like Atreus in God of War) or players will be able to switch between the two characters. Either way, it has been confirmed that Spider-Man 2 will be a single-player experience.

Spider-Man 2 is set to release some time in 2023, meaning that the game is still years away. Hopefully we get to see more soon.
