AMD and Microsoft partner up to bring FidelityFX features to Xbox Series X/S

Back when the Xbox Series X/S consoles were announced, we knew that Microsoft went for a fully-featured RDNA 2 GPU for the system, enabling compatibility with FidelityFX features. Now, AMD's additional graphics and performance enhancing features are officially coming to Xbox consoles, paving the way for these features to become more widely used by both gamers and developers.

The announcement was made during Microsoft's Game Stack Live keynote, during which, Microsoft and AMD announced their partnership to bring FidelityFX features to Xbox consoles. For those who don't know, FidelityFX is an open-source collection of technologies to enhance visuals and save on performance.

Some of the tools now compatible with Xbox Series X/S consoles include Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, Variable Shading, Denoiser and eventually, FidelityFX Super Resolution, AMD's answer to Nvidia's DLSS technology, will also be available for use on consoles.

Other improvements coming to Microsoft's game development pipeline include a new DirectX 12 Agility SDK and an update to the HLSL Shader Model. DX12 Agility streamlines new API features to make it easier for game developers to implement new technologies, while the HLSL Shader Model 6.6 update adds new capabilities and greater flexibility with support for 64-bit integer atomics, dynamic resource binding, compute shader derivatives and more.
