Square Enix cancels Final Fantasy XI mobile reboot

Back in 2015, Square Enix announced a new version of Final Fantasy XI for mobile devices, with a planned launch in 2016. That launch window came and went with no sign of the game. Now in 2021, the mobile reboot has been cancelled.

The Final Fantasy XI mobile reboot was being co-developed by Nexon and Square Enix. We already know that the game is far behind schedule and as reported by GI.biz, both companies have decided that the project is not meeting expectations, leading to the cancellation.

Back in 2018, Nexon released a few screenshots of the game in action, but things quickly went quiet again. These screenshots are likely the last we'll see of the game.

While this project didn't go as planned, Square Enix has plenty of other mobile games in development, including two based on Final Fantasy 7 to help promote the remake.

KitGuru Says: It would have been interesting to see the differences between Final Fantasy XI on PC and the mobile version but it looks like we won't get to make those comparisons after all. Do you think cancelling the Final Fantasy XI mobile reboot was the right move?
