The Epic Games Store finally adds mod support

When the Epic Games Store first launched, the PC client lacked many of the features found on other more mature PC store fronts. Slowly but surely however, Epic Games seems to be adding many of the much-requested features into its own store. Following on from the recent addition of achievements, mods are finally coming to the Epic Games Store.

Currently, mod support is only available for a single game: MechWarrior 5, although it is expected to see wider support over time. While most people are familiar with how Steam workshop and its modding tools operate, the way modding will function for MechWarrior 5 is as follows: “With your purchase of Mech Warrior 5 you get access to the Mech Warrior 5 mod editor. The editor will appear in your game library. Install it and start creating.”

The modding support itself appears to be quite comprehensive, with the developers claiming that “with access to all Blueprints and Content Assets used to make the game, the MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Mod Editor is more than a basic toolset. Excluding source code and code modification, it is otherwise a fully featured version of the MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries project used for development.”

Currently, it is unknown which other titles will get mod support, and whether it will be equally as comprehensive. Either way, though it still lags behind Steam when it comes to the sheer number of features, it is encouraging to see Epic Games continue to improve and add new functionality to its store.
