Microsoft no longer interested in bringing Game Pass or xCloud to competing consoles

Despite previous rumours and teasers that Xbox Game Pass may one day come to other platforms, Microsoft is officially shooting that idea down this week. While Phil Spencer and his team previously considered bringing Xbox content to competing systems, the idea has since been put to rest.

During a recent interview with Game Star, Spencer discussed plans for Game Pass and xCloud. Naturally, rumours of Game Pass or xCloud coming to the Nintendo Switch popped up, in large part due to strong rumours of a close partnership between the two companies.

“The thing about other gaming console platforms is we're not able to bring a full Xbox experience on those platforms”, Spencer said. “In places where we have brought Xbox, like mobile phones like we're doing now with Project xCloud with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, what we've done with PC with bringing our full Xbox experience there. We know when somebody is playing one of our Xbox games there is an expectation that they've got their Xbox LIVE community, they have their achievements, Game Pass is an option for me, my first-party library is completely there”.

Since other platforms aren't necessarily interested in allowing Xbox Live and other components of the Xbox ecosystem on their platforms, Game Pass won't be making its way over either.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft has a strong footing entering the next generation, so pulling back on the idea of multi-platform gaming does make some sense. As long as Microsoft also keeps supporting PC just as much as Xbox, most of us will be kept happy.
