OnePlus 8 Pro temporarily disables ‘X-Ray’ camera filter

The OnePlus 8 Pro has been shipping for a little while now and early adopters were quick to notice the new ‘X-Ray' filter in the camera application, which can see through certain plastics and clothing materials. As you might expect, a camera feature that can see through clothes kicked up some privacy concerns, leading to the feature now being disabled. 

The feature gained mass attention following a video from Unbox Therapy, which shows the OnePlus 8 Pro's ‘Photochrom' filter capturing images from underneath a t-shirt and through the casing on an Apple TV set top box.

While there is not a statement from OnePlus English PR just yet, the company did release a statement on its Weibo page in Chinese, which confirms that the feature is being “temporarily disabled” due to the privacy concerns raised by users:

“OnePlus has put user privacy in the most important position. In order to eliminate the impact on user privacy under possible extreme circumstances and eliminate everyone ’s concerns, we decided to temporarily disable the filter function through software upgrades.”

The Photochrom filter works by capturing infrared light that is usually invisible to the naked eye. It provides an interesting effect for photos. This type of camera technology has also been around for a long time now, just not usually in a consumer device like the OnePlus 8 Pro. We should hear more about plans to update the feature next week.
