Super Mario Maker 2’s final major update announced

Since Super Mario Maker 2 first released late last June, Nintendo have continued to update the game creation toolkit with new additions and added features. Back in December, Link from The Legend of Zelda was added as a playable character. Now, less than a year after its initial launch, Mario Maker 2 is set to receive its final – but also its biggest – update.

Dubbed the ‘World Maker Update’, Nintendo is adding a large plethora of new enemies, tools, items, and gameplay altering features. Firstly the main addition in this update is the World Maker Mode, where users can create an overworld similar to that which is seen in Super Mario World for the SNES. “Multiple courses created by a user can be tied together on a path from the starting point on a world map to the end castle”. Furthermore, the looks of the map itself can be customised. Up to 8 worlds can be strung together for a total of 40 courses. This feature means that users now have the ability to not only create entire Mario levels, but entire Mario games.

New enemies coming to the game include all 7 koopalings, each of which will move and act in unique ways. Other enemies arriving in the game include “the key-chasing Phanto and the wind-up Mechakoopas.”

Mario will be able to take advantage of new power ups and course parts in this latest update. Though a Super Mario Bros. 2 style hasn't been added to the game, the next best thing has. A new mushroom power up will cause Mario to take on the appearance of the second game’s style. Furthermore, the gameplay will be altered too, with Mario being able to pick up and throw enemies, among other items.

The Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 is also being added, allowing Mario to swim through water, and even run atop its surface. Further power ups include the Power Balloon, the Super Acorn, and the boomerang Flower, alongside wearables such as the Cannon Box, Propeller box, and Goomba Mask.

Users will be able to experience and play with all this and more when the free update to Super Mario Maker 2 arrives on the 22nd of April. As previously mentioned, this will be the last major update to the game. Though it is certainly a substantial update, it is a shame to see that post-launch support for the game is ending after less than a year. That being said, this final update should provide enough new content to have fans of the game satisfied for many months to come.
