Today our resident CPU experts are back with another episode of Luke and Leo Get Technical, and this one is all about the recent Intel and AMD HEDT processor launches. Luke and Leo discuss in detail how the CPU landscape has changed with these new launches, and there's also a look ahead to CES 2020.
LUKE AND LEO'S NOTES:
AMD and Intel launch CPUs on the same day, initially at the same time.

UK Intel prices for 10th Gen are higher in GBP than USD!
Threadripper 3960X and 3970X with TRX40 platform.
Level1Techs has shown Threadripper WX suffered more on Windows than it did on Linux but some workloads badly need access to system memory. New Threadripper is just superb and the I/O die makes all the difference.
Threadripper 3000 has an I/O die with 8.34 billion transistors and 416mm^2 area.
Core chiplets are 74mm^2.
Threadripper 3990X ‘in 2020’. Will this be announced at Computex?

What are we expecting at CES? No sign of Intel laptops on the horizon because 10nm has continuing problems so Comet Lake looks far better than Ice Lake. So where the heck are the 45W mobile CPUs we want to see!

The next release from Intel on the desktop is rumoured to be Comet Lake with 10 cores and presumably with 20 threads.
Core i9 – what the heck does the name even mean these days, ranging from 8 cores to 18 cores.
