Netflix has already renewed The Witcher for a second season

The last couple of weeks have been big for news on Netflix's The Witcher. The final trailer gave us a much better look at the show as a whole and a release date for season 1, which premiers on the 20th of December. Now over a month ahead of the show's release, Netflix has announced that it has been renewed for a second season.

This of course follows an interview with the series showrunner last week, in which we were told that story ideas and plans have been mapped for as many as seven seasons of The Witcher. Obviously, Netflix isn't going to greenlight all seven at once but the fact that a second season is already guaranteed should be encouraging.

According to a report from Variety, The Witcher season 2 will begin production in early 2020 at a location in London. We'll be getting another eight episodes in season 2, although the second season apparently won't debut until 2021, so there will be a lengthy wait between seasons- a tactic that is growing increasingly common as Netflix continues to try to balance its release schedule with the sheer amount of content it is producing.

This wouldn't be the first time that Netflix has greenlit a second season for a new show before it goes live. Typically, Netflix likes to give most new shows at least two seasons to make their mark before potentially pulling the plug. Hopefully in the case of The Witcher, there will be enough interest to carry it through a decent number of seasons.

KitGuru Says: We still don't know how good season one of The Witcher will be, although the most recent trailer raised my confidence in the show quite a bit. There is a lot of story to tell in The Witcher universe, so all we can ask is that the creators get the time to do it justice.
