Obsidian begins staffing up for its next Triple A RPG

Obsidian has been making headlines quite a bit over the last year. Not only are we all very excited for The Outer Worlds to launch in October, but we're also looking forward to seeing what the famed RPG studio will do next under Microsoft's ownership. Obsidian has already begun staffing up for its next big RPG, with twelve new studio positions being opened up.

The collection of new job listings call for engine and network programmers, UI and lighting artists, a narrative designer and more- essentially setting up the core team for this project. The narrative designer listing specifically tells us that Obsidian is looking for someone to help make its “next great multi-platform RPG”, essentially confirming that it is planned for both Xbox and PC.

Other areas that Obsidian is looking to focus on include first-person melee and ranged combat gameplay and RPG systems like a day and night cycle.

We don't really have more details than that other than the fact that this game will be based on Unreal Engine 4 and is aiming to be ‘Triple A'. We don't know what this game will end up being but it looks like Obsidian is doubling down on high budget RPGs again after spending a few years working exclusively on CRPG projects like Pillars of Eternity.

KitGuru Says: Obsidian has been one of the most exciting RPG studios for years now and with stable ownership and cashflow, we're bound to see some big things in the future. What would you like to see Obsidian focus on next? Are there any old franchises that the studio should perhaps bring back?
