Destiny 2: Shadowkeep announced, base game is going free and coming to Steam

Now that Bungie is independent once again and working Destiny all on its own, we are going to be seeing some major changes to the game this year. Not only is timed exclusive content going away for the PS4 version of Destiny 2, but the game's year-one content is going free to play, cross-save functionality is coming for all platforms and Destiny 2 will be releasing on Steam this year, alongside the next major expansion.

Destiny Shadowkeep was officially announced last night with a September 17th release date. As previously leaked, this expansion will take players back to the moon, although this time the map will be twice as big as it was in Destiny 1. This is also a standalone expansion, so you don't need to have purchased the other content to jump in. The Shadowkeep expansion will be sold for $35 at launch, while the Forsaken expansion and annual pass will be sold in a $40 bundle.

The base version of Destiny 2 is getting renamed to Destiny 2: New Light and will be free to play. This new free to play version of Destiny 2 bundles the base game content and the first to expansions- Curse of Osiris and Warmind. This version of the game will launch on Steam in September alongside the new expansion.

The final big change coming to Destiny is the addition of cross-saves. For the first time, you will be able to take your characters and progress and use them across multiple platforms. Initially, this was just going to include Xbox One, PC and Stadia. However, during a last minute meeting earlier this week, Bungie was able to convince Sony to get on board as well.

So far, a second annual pass for Destiny 2 has not been announced but we may hear more about future updates beyond Shadowkeep closer to, or following its launch.

KitGuru Says: Destiny 2 has had far more ups and downs for me compared to the first game. However, it looks like Bungie is ready to make another big turning point with the franchise. Will any of you be returning to Destiny 2 or picking it up for the first time when it goes free to play?
