Persona 5 is coming to Nintendo Switch in a spin-off that no one asked for

Following the exciting unveiling of Persona 5: The Royal for PlayStation 4, fans of the series turned their heads towards Persona 5 S in hopes of the game finally hitting Nintendo Switch. Officially dubbed Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, the game will indeed be hitting Nintendo's hybrid handheld alongside PlayStation 4, but will instead be a hack-and-slash spin-off that suggests Atlus isn’t listening to its fans.

With Persona itself being a spin-off of the larger Megami Tensei series, fans are no stranger to deviating from core entries. So far, we’ve seen the cast of Persona 5 take part in a rhythm game called Dancing in Starlight, crossover into Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth and make a guest appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It isn't necessarily a question of whether Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers has a place, but whether it should be a priority amidst fan demand for a Switch version of the original game.

Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is being developed by Omega Force, a division of Koei Tecmo known for its extensive experience with the Dynasty Warriors franchise. The developer is also known for its respectful handling of third-party licenses, having worked on Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors and multiple games in the One Piece universe. By the short trailer alone, we can see that this game will play in a similar way, with Joker fighting alongside Arsene to take out massive waves of enemies.

Although there are a good number of fans that are welcoming Scramble with open arms, many more have voiced their disappointment that the critically acclaimed core experience of Persona 5 is still exclusive to PlayStation 4. For those that are invested in the new idea, the end of the trailer teases a previously unseen character that stares into the face of Joker, hinting that there’s more than meets the eye.

Currently, Atlus has yet to reveal a release date for Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers, but the action hack-and-slash will be headed to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

KitGuru Says: It’s worth mentioning that this simply means that Persona 5 S is not what people were hoping for and Atlus could potentially have more in store for fans in the future. That being said, we wouldn’t recommend holding your breath at this point. How do you feel about Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers?
