20th Century Fox files trademark for new video game, Alien: Blackout

Not all Alien video games are created equal. For every Colonial Marines, there’s a beloved Alien: Isolation. It looks as though 20th Century Fox is hoping to capture the same magic as the latter, filing a trademark for the mysterious “Alien: Blackout”.

The application was filed on the 22nd of November and is currently under examination, pertaining to keywords such as “downloadable computer game software” and “computer game discs”. Given the backlash over certain mobile game announcements in recent months, it’s worth mentioning that “downloadable mobile application software” is also mentioned in the listing.

Creative Assembly is known for having created Alien: Isolation, debatably the most acclaimed game in the series to date. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the studio will return to the franchise after most of the original team has left Creative Assembly behind. Instead, many eyes have turned towards Hideo Kojima, who posted photos of his visit to Fox Studios just two days prior to the filing.

With Kojima’s Death Stranding still in the works, the likelihood of his participation in Alien: Blackout is called into question. It’s plausible that he is instead helping out his good friend Geoff Keighley in preparing for an unveiling during The Game Awards 2018, which takes place on December 7th.

Keighley himself posted a mysterious tweet stating “Worlds Will Change” in retro typography, accompanied by a “W” symbol in the top left. Not only is Alien famous for retaining its 80s sci-fi aesthetic, but the “W” could be hinting towards the fictional Weyland Corp, or Weyland-Yutani Corp after its acquisition. The former is responsible for space exploration and terraforming, while the merger introduced synthetic manufacturing and the task to procure the titular aliens, Xenomorphs.

KitGuru Says: It looks like we have a two-week wait until we will potentially find anything out about Alien: Blackout. In the meantime, do you have anything you’d like to see from a new Alien game?
