Apple’s SVP Bertrand Serlet leaving company

Apple have announced that their senior vice president of Mac software engineering Bertrand Serlet is leaving the company. Serlet has said in Apple's official release that he ‘wants to focus less on products and more on science'. He holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of Orsay in France.

Serlet is one of Apple's more senior executives, having originally worked with Steve Jobs at NeXT, the company which the Apple leader founded in 1985. Serlet has been working with Jobs for the last 22 years, so there is certainly a long history with Apple. Serlet had a major role in the creation and development of Mac OS X.

Prior to working at NeXT, Serlet worked at Xerox PARC for four years. At Apple he took over the role of senior vice president in 2003 when the former software engineering head, Avie Tevanian took the role of chief software technology officer.

Serlet is being replaced by Craig Federighi, who is Apple's current vice president of Mac Software engineering. Federigihi is also a NeXT veteran who joined Apple in 1997.

“Craig has done a great job managing the Mac OS team for the past two years,” said Serlet in Apple's press release. “Lion is a great release and the transition should be seamless.”
