AMD hires another former Intel Vice President

Intel has seen better days behind the scenes, with former CEO Brian Krzanich stepping down just three weeks ago due to a breach in company policy. Now, it seems that AMD has seized the opportunity to headhunt former Intel VP Martin Ashton for its Corporate Vice President role.

Ashton made a name for himself in the technological industry during his 25-year sting with Imagination Technologies, rising to the rank of Executive Vice President of Engineering PowerVR. From there, he timed his jump to Intel incredibly well, dodging Imagination Technologies’ impending share drop as Apple had plans in motion to drop its reliance on PowerVR GPU technology.

Although Ashton claimed many titles at Intel, such as Vice President, Core and Visual Computing Group, Chief Engineer, VTT and Director of Hardware and Co-Director of Architecture, his time with the company was surprisingly short lived, having started in November 2016. Less than two years later, Ashton has joined the ranks of AMD under Senior Vice President of engineering for the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG), David Wang.

“We are very happy to bring Martin and his talent to AMD for our graphics roadmap and our business,” AMD said in a statement to Hexus. “David Wang is building a great team from both within AMD with key promotions and with key external additions like Martin.”

KitGuru Says: People jump from company to company all the time, but it seems that it couldn’t be worst timing for Intel. Ashton seems like he will be perfect help for AMD to bolster its Radeon GPU line-up to match its successful Ryzen CPU range.
