Epic Games is bringing Fortnite Battle Royale to mobile

Epic Games has announced that it will be porting its popular, free-to-play shooter Fortnite Battle Royale to mobile devices. The game will initially be tested on iOS, with Android support following shortly after.

“On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac,” Epic Games confirmed in a blog post. “Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.”

Once the mobile versions reach their final build, both iOS and Android will offer cross-play with PC, PlayStation 4 and even Mac. Both mobile versions will even be able to compete against one another. Xbox One is noticeably missing from this thanks to Epic Games “partnership” with Sony.

“We believe this is the future of games,” said the development team. “The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want.”

Those that want to participate in the upcoming tests can register on the game’s official website. Successful players will be sent invite codes that can also be shared with friends, starting on March 12th.

Battle royale rival PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds also has a mobile version in the works specifically developed for China This alongside the numerous clones across smartphone devices proves that it is entirely possible for Fortnite to work handheld.

KitGuru Says: Just how well a handheld battle royale game will play is another story. Part of me is wondering if, like console, Fortnite can beat PUBG to the punchline and get a working mobile version out worldwide instead. Would you be open to playing a battle royale game on your mobile? Do you think players on handheld devices would be at a disadvantage to other players?
