Android Activations climb, should the competition be afraid?

Android has been gaining a lot of market share since 2010, growing from only 3.9 percent to a staggering 22.7 percent in the course of a year. Apple's iOS however grew just slightly from 14.4 percent to 15.7 percent, with Blackberry OS falling from 19.9 percent to 16 percent. Microsoft trail with a drop from 8.7 percent to 4.2 percent. What does this indicate for 2011 however?

Nokia are one of the prime examples, with many analysts feeling they have made a glaring mistake by dropping Symbian to opt for Windows Phone 7, rather than joining the Google Android makers. Nokia have felt that their Symbian platform wasn't enough to drive sales into the future, and with Windows Phone 7 they hope to reconquer many new clients.

By the time that Nokia get to ship smartphones with Windows Phone 7 installed, competitors will have the Android based devices on the market with 3D screens and multicore SoC's such as the new Nvidia Tegra 2 3D, Tegra 3, or even TI's OMAP5.

Android: Market dominance in a few years going on current trends

Low end phones with Android will also drive huge sales for Google partners and even Apple are preempting this with low cost versions of their phone range for the entry level market.

Google have created a very impressive video showing the online activations of their phones and just how quickly they are growing across the planet.
