The Pirate Bay may start using visitor CPU resources for mining

Over the weekend, torrenters across the web noticed something a little different about The Pirate Bay. A new cryptocurrency miner had appeared in the code for the website, which used some of the CPU resources from visitors to mine Monero coins. At first, there was some backlash due to the lack of communication and a typo in the code that meant users experienced massive CPU usage spikes.

For years, popular torrent sites including The Pirate Bay, have had the option to donate via Bitcoin. However, ads were still required to help cover the costs of operation. As a replacement for that, TPB implemented a Javascript miner over the weekend. At first, a typo meant that users were experiencing massive increases in CPU usage, which led to a lot of complaints on the site's forums. However, this was later corrected so that the script only used between 20 and 30 percent of free CPU resources while visiting the site.

While there was a period of silence from the site operators, TorrentFreak was told that the miner was only active for a 24-hour period as a test for a new way to generate revenue, potentially to replace ads entirely on the site.

A little later on in a blog post, the site explained further: “This is only a test. We really want to get rid of all the ads. But we also need enough money to keep the site running. Do you want ads or do you want to give away a few of your CPU cycles every time you visit the site? Of course the mining can be blocked by a normal ad-blocker.”

It was also explained that if you have multiple tabs open for TPB, the miner would be limited to running in just one of them. So far, comments on the post are leaning more towards the positive side, so this may end up becoming a permanent change.

KitGuru Says: Secretly implementing a currency miner without telling anyone was an invasive and overall bad move on the site's part. However, this does appear to be an interesting way to replace ads, so really it just comes down to what users would prefer. That said, if TPB starts doing it, then many more will likely follow. Where do you guys land on this issue?

  1. Bad way to implement it but a good idea to drum up cash. If it replaces ad’s at some point then this is a valid option for sure. My thinking is what’s to stop them form never getting rid of the ad’s and taking in both incomes from the ad’s and the mining. So yes it is a good idea in theory but it also depends on just how greedy a site manager wants to be.

  2. I’d rather this than ads.
