AMD’s latest Radeon driver promises notable performance gains in Prey

We have known for some time now that Bethesda and AMD have partnered up to optimise future games for Ryzen CPUs and Radeon GPUs. The first game to benefit from this partnership is Prey, which launches today. To mark the occasion, AMD has shipped a new Radeon Software update, which will bring notable performance gains to those playing with 500-series graphics cards.

Radeon Software Crimson ReLive 17.5.1 is the latest driver, containing various optimisations for Prey. Nvidia also has a ‘Game Ready' driver out, though the green team were less specific about performance gains.

Here is a breakdown of the performance gains AMD observed through its testing:

  • Up to 5% faster performance using Radeon Software 17.5.1 with Prey DirectX 11 on the 8GB Radeon RX 580 than with Radeon Software 17.4.4
  • Up to 78% faster performance using Radeon Software 17.5.1 with Prey DirectX 11 on 4GB Radeon RX 570 multi-GPU than with 4GB Radeon RX 570 single-GPU
  • Up to 42% faster performance using Radeon Software 17.5.1 with Prey on the Radeon RX 570 (4GB) with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti (4GB) on NV 381.89 with DirectX 11 at 1920×1080 (1080p)

  1. Here is a list of fixed issues as well

Fixed an issue that may sometimes cause the error message “1603” during uninstall.

Radeon Settings may sometimes fail to update through the auto Radeon Software update feature.

Forza Horizon 3™ may experience minor graphics corruption in some game maps

    Sid Meier’s Civilization™ VI may
experience an application crash when using Hybrid Graphics system
    configurations and windowed game mode

Radeon WattMan may fail to apply settings on some Radeon R9 390 series graphics products.

Added switchable graphics support for Unigine™ Superposition for XConnect and Hybrid Graphics.

I noticed right off the bat that they might have fixed the Wattman failing to apply settings may actually work on R9 390 series cards now. I know what I will be downloading this evening and trying. If it still fracks my 390x cards up I can always go back the the last set of drivers that still worked right but it would be good to have the latest drivers for the newest games. If anyone is interested I will get back with an update if it finally works right.
