Samsung doubles down on curved TVs while Sony and LG bail out

While other TV makers are giving the Curved TV craze a rest, Samsung is doubling down. This year, LG and Sony have already opted to start producing less curved displays but over in South Korea, Samsung is cooking up a batch of 22 new models for 2017.

According to a report from ETNews, the likes of Sony and LG are actually planning no new curved TV sets this year, so they will only have older models available for the time being. This means at some point, Samsung may end up being the only premium brand to still sell curved TVs. When that happens, it will be very interesting to see how things go sales-wise.

Right now, curved TVs are marketed as offering a more immersive experience as the display wraps around your field of view. However, this effect only really kicks in when you have a display large enough to truly benefit, you also need to be somewhat close to the centre of the screen to get the wrap-around effect.

As a result of this, Samsung will be focussing on curved TV sizes of 65-inches and up when the new QLED series drops.

KitGuru Says: I have a 50-inch curved Samsung display at home and even at that size, the curve is so subtle that it doesn't really add to the experience at all. It doesn't detract either, but it does seem like a pointless addition at that size. Do any of you have a curved TV at the moment? What do you think of it?

That’s a subtle way for making customers pay more for something that’s totally useless.

  2. The weird thing is that TV’s are probably one of the worst use cases i can think of for curved screens.

Unless you are a single household and don’t have a lot of friends over, this will be a hindrance. Curved screens are not that good for group viewing.

Now a PC monitor however, there’s a good application for a curved screen…

  4. never understood the curved craze…
it’s only a benefit if you use it alone and sit a short distance from the screen – say less than 3 feet for a 50 incher.
for every other usecase (wall mounting, family time, friends, multi purpose desk, …) it’s a hindrance
