Microsoft is now sneaking ads into the Windows 10 file explorer

Microsoft has made some questionable decisions over the course of Windows 10's lifespan but for many, this might be a step too far. Microsoft has already been experimenting with advertising on Windows 10, with some appearing on Cortana and the Start menu but now, Microsoft seems to be sneaking advertisements into the File Explorer too.

Over on the Windows 10 subreddit, one user came across what appears to be two adverts in File Explorer, one for Microsoft's own OneDrive cloud storage service and another for what appears to be Bejeweled but that's a guess on my part. You can see the image below:

According to Microsoft, this new OneDrive notification within the File Explorer is considered to be a ‘tip', which can be turned off or dismissed if you choose. It seems to be tied into Windows 10's notification system.

Aside from the obvious intrusion issues, this practise could also be considered somewhat anti-competitive, with Microsoft turning its OS into a way of pushing its own services without presenting any alternatives. Google is actually facing trouble with the EU Commission for similar practises with Android and pre-installed Google applications.

KitGuru Says: If Microsoft continues to be this pushy with ads within Windows 10, I imagine more than a few will be so turned off that they revert back to Windows 7. I can see absolutely no good reason for there to be adverts within the File Explorer, that's just taking this whole thing too far.

  1. If this just happens with one drive then I am glad I am glad I totally disable it then. If this starts happening everywhere in win 10 then I see ad blockers springing up to stop this. I also see law suites in Microsoft’s future if it happens. Yes they gave win 10 away for a year but there have also been a lot of copies sold since it went non free. So yea law suites waiting to happen I would think heck even the free copy people most likely would be wanting to sue or just drop MS in favor of Apple. So if this is going to be the new thing all MS is gonna do is play into Apples hands and make them a whole lot of new customers which is sad really. I hardly think MS would be that stupid then again they have done some pretty weird things in the past.

If it’s very infrequent and limited only to Microsoft related services I can live with it. Would really rather not have to live with it but what am I going to do? Switch to Mac? Lol.

  4. People like you are the reason things turn to shit and companys start ripping us off.

All they are doing is pushing themselves out of the market. They’ll push casual users to Mac and techies to Linux. I guarantee that unless action is taken, this is only the beginning. Well, actually the beginning was when they started including Candy Crush and other s**t on fresh installs of Windows 10. Not to mention it keeps trying to reinstall Candy Crush on my machine

    What a nice compliment.

  7. I have the same issue. Mac is way overpriced, doesn’t offer all the services I want, and I’d have to get used to a whole new OS.

The ads are not cool, you already pay for Windows, but it’s better than switching. Especially knowing that you’ll get ripped off.

  8. Linux will eventually become my daily driver if this becomes a serious issue. Hopefully we’ll see more gaming support for it, and maybe even a rise of SteamOS. I got Windows 10 for free, and I have always recommended it since the very first technical betas, but a change like this is enough to push me back to my Arch Linux rice machine.

  9. Been happening for months. Keep up at the back,

  10. Casual user will not go to mac due to cost and the fact theu won’t know how to use it

  11. They will Mod Windows 10 and turn off adds.

  12. if they do this they better make this a free version of windows 10 or its a no go the retail price of this os is 199 dollars and apple is free why but apple only works on apple hardware

A lot of people that can afford them have Macs. They said the same about smartphones, but everyone managed to afford one, most of which being ~600.
And people aren’t idiots, most young people can pick up new tech easily.

I hate to be the one pointing these things out, but “revert” is enough to convey the meaning of “going back”. Don’t write “revert back” any more than you would “go back back”.

Nothing against this site, I just happen to notice it almost everywhere nowadays.
