People are using the Steam Awards to tell Valve to make Half-Life 3

This year as part of the Steam Autumn Sale, Valve is doing something a little different- they have launched ‘The Steam Awards. This awards ceremony not only allows Steam users to vote games into specific categories, but you can also nominate a category. As you might imagine, it hasn't taken long for the community to create the ‘game that deserves a sequel' award as a way of getting Valve's attention and showing demand for Half-Life 3.

Valve's official award categories for the Steam Awards are all fairly light-hearted and humorous. There technically isn't an official ‘game that deserves a sequel' award category but since the community can suggest a category and nominate a game for it, many are choosing to do so with Half-Life 2.

The community effort started out on the Half-Life subreddit and the ball seems to be rolling as the post has received well over 6000 upvotes and many commenters are expressing support for the movement. If you want to nominate a game for an award, all you need to do is head over to a game's store page and go through the steps shown there. If you want to bug Valve about Half-Life 3, then you can head to the Half-Life 2: Episode Two page and enter the custom category “game that deserves a sequel”.

KitGuru Says: While it is fun to see the community get on Valve's back about Half-Life 3, it is unlikely that Valve will end up making this community award official. Still, it might be good to show Valve that there is still demand for more Half-Life.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

  1. This is about break-even, and it’s the only logical conclusion for why a HL3/ep3 hasn’t come: Valve thinks the majority lost interest in the series, so what if a minority demands they finish the story for decades on?

In other words, the minority needs to widen the interest base for a HL3/ep3 in order for Valve to make money off of it. They can’t just demand a developer to make something without there being enough return on investment. It is like those demanding a HL3/ep3 don’t realize how tiny of a group they represent– unless the community has grown purely on the backs of a game series so old that modern IGP has no issue running max detail smooth (I know, I’m playing World in Conflict on a Broadwell-C w/HD6200), and anyone getting newer dedicated cards that normally wouldn’t touch older games somehow are.

That said, I’ve only ever played HL2-ep1 and ep2, the latter racked up over 400 hours on Steam. So it’s not like I don’t want it, I’m not convinced the market is big enough for a third installment. Only Valve can prove me wrong.

  3. Shut the fuck up…

  4. Valve don’t seem to have a great interest in being a large AAA game developer any more. They’ve got their business model going something sweet and they don’t really need to be a developer to make bank now.

  5. You don’t grasp just how popular half life is then. There is a HUUUUUGE market for the third game, even if it was terrible it would sell a billion dollars worth.

People don’t forget good games as quickly as you seem to think either. Look at all the retro games being remade, some of them do very well to like x-com. Half life 1 and 2 are vastly more popular then x-com ever was.

But I suppose if only valve can prove you wrong, I am wasting my breath?

  8. Occam’s Razor: Maybe the market isn’t as big as you think it is, perhaps Valve already knows this which is why they aren’t pursuing another installment. It isn’t like they don’t have a marketing department.

But you don’t like that logic, you think they are doing this just to hurt all of you and me telling you this, you and others take it personal.

  9. Make Half-Life great again

  10. One yr ago I finally left my previous work and that decision changed everything for me… I started doing work on-line, over a website I discovered on-line, for a few hours every day, and I earn much more than i did on my old work… My last month check was for $9000… Great thing about this is that now i have more time with my family… CHILP.IT/728813e
